Happy Halloween — Gotta Love It!

The good folks at Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided us with a free copy of “We Baby Bears: The Magical Box” (www.warnerbros.com) for review purposes and to help spread the good word about its release this week. All opinions expressed in this blog are entirely our own.

The We Baby Bears, Grizz, Panda and Ice Bear, suddenly find themselves homeless when a heartless landlord turns them out into the street with only a carboard box for survival. But when these plucky bears wish upon an evening star, the magic starts to happen as they are transported via this now magical box through 20 episodes into places around the world that might be suitable for their new home! The action is fast paced, the animation colorful and amusing, the plots entertaining and the We Baby Bears thoroughly adorable. This DVD makes a great holiday stocking stuffer for any household with kids, especially those familiar with the original Cartoon Network series We Bare Bears.

Biographies make great holiday gifts because they can be inspirational, entertaining and informative. Those qualities certainly apply to “Gary Moore: The Official Biography” by Harry Shapiro (www.jawbonepress.com).

Moore was an Irish-born blues-rock guitarist who first came on the American music scene in the 1970s. Although he passed suddenly at the age of 58 in 2011, Moore remains among the most influential guitar players of the 20th century, having made his unique mark as both musician and songwriter. Shapiro’s biography deftly examines Moore’s journey to musical fame through first-person interviews with those who knew and worked with him. Anyone on your gift list this holiday season who is a music lover, guitar player or aspiring musician will be delighted by receiving this extensive Moore biography.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has provided us with a free copy of their just released DVD set, “The Time Traveler’s Wife: The Complete Series” (www.warnerbros.com) for review purposes. All opinions expressed in this post are entirely our own.

Based on Audrey Niffenegger’s best-selling novel of the same name, this 6-episode set is a love story of Clare and Henry’s relationship. But their marriage faces the unique complication of Henry’s time travel activities. It is beautifully filmed and performed, with compelling characters and lush locations. It challenges the viewer to question the value of worrying about either past or future in favor of accepting that the now is the best time of all and that now is all any of us ever have in our experiences and our relationships. This set also offers 30 minutes of bonus content with actor, producer and creator interviews. It makes a great gift for anyone intrigued by the concept of time travel!

Few areas of the country are as rich in historical and architectural treasures as New York City. Author Stephanie Azzarone and photographer Robert F. Rodriguez capture both aspects beautifully in their recently released “Heaven on the Hudson: Mansions, Monuments and Marvels of Riverside Park” (www.fordhampress.com).

This is the perfect book for anyone who loves to armchair travel as it takes the reader to the westernmost edge of the Big Apple and follows along numerous points of interest along Riverside Drive.. Azzarone has done a yeoman’s job of researching the history of this area, nicely supported by Rodriguez’ photos, and the pages of this volume sing out as a love letter to its cultural richness. “Heaven on the Hudson” is definitely one book to add to your list of Christmas gift possibilities!

Many families during the holiday season enjoy reading a classic story together, such as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”, as part of their annual celebration. The action and activity takes place in a town called Heartbeat Falls, where people of all shapes, sizes, colors and faiths take joy in coming together to celebrate the most magical time of the year.
